Poe was born Annie Danielewzki, sister of the novelist Mark Danielewski (House of Leaves), on March 23, 1968. Her nickname comes from her favorite childhood story, The Masque of the Red Death, by Edgar Allen Poe. Though she is mostly "underground," she has gotten a little bit of radio play with songs such as "Angry Johnny," and the Mark Danielewski version of "Hey Pretty."

Her freshman album entitled "Hello" was a sultry look into what happens when jazz, alternative, folk, and hipster collide full force. Powered by incredible rock anthems such as "Trigger Happy Jack" and "Chokin the Cherry," and mellowed out by the beautiful ballads "Fly Away" and "That Day" there is little that this record doesn't have to offer to an appreciative ear. Poe spent two years touring to promote this piece, developing a die-hard fan club known as the Angry Psychos along the way, and then headed back to the studio to begin work on her follow-up album.

Five years passed before the much awaited release of her second CD entitled "Haunted." Produced solely on her Macintosh computer, the album is a concept piece which deals beautifully with the death of her father. Mixed into the vast library of songs on the disc are recordings of her father's voice lifted from old tapes of his lectures. The ghostly recordings, combined with truly amazing lyrics, make for an album that leaves the listener thinking for a long time afterwards.

Once again, Poe perfectly explores every facet of alternative rock. From swanky numbers such as "Control" and "Amazed," to tear-jerkers like "Spanish Doll," and "If You Were Here," to the sexually empowering anthem, "Not a Virgin."

All in all, although Poe may be too intellectual for your average radio listener, her melodic and captivating voice, along with lyrical abilities that compare to any great female rocker of our time guarantee her a cult following for years to come.
